1901™ is a Malaysia home-grown quick serve franchise business famous for its hot dogs. Its success is all the more inspiring because its founders, Tengku Rozidar and Ahmad Zakir, began their enterprise at the height of the Asian Financial Crisis. The term ‘hot dog’ was coined in the year 1901; the brand name reflects this little bit of history. Coincidentally, the first 1901™ outlet at Sunway Pyramid, Selangor, began its operation in July, which is the official National Hot Dog month in the US. Even the design of the pushcart was then reminiscent of America’s hot dog stalls.

As the business continued to expand over the years, the founders were moved to share their success with others. Tengku Rozidar and Ahmad Zakir decided to set up a franchise system and made it affordable and easy to operate - offering two outlet formats, the Pushcart and the Snack Café.

This way, even people who aspire to run their own business but do not have the knowledge and experience could still pursue their dreams to become entrepreneurs. Today, 1901™ has grown to become one of the most respected and successful homegrown brands in Malaysia, having proven itself resilient even during financially challenging times.

Awards & recognition
The Malaysia Superbrands Council awarded Nineteen O One Sdn Bhd with the Consumer Superbrand 2003/2004 and again in 2005. According to the Council, “a Superbrand offers consumers significant emotional and physical advantage over its competitors that customers want, recognise and are willing to pay a premium for.”

1901™ was awarded the Most Promising Franchisor of the Year for 2000/2001 by the Malaysian Franchise Association. The award recognises the achievements of up-and-coming, enterprising franchisors who are well-positioned for the future. Evaluation criteria include the franchisor’s management, development of the franchise business and a sound franchise system.
